Project Pop Up: Downtown
Project Pop Up: Downtown is a program of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, in conjunction with the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Department of City Planning and Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership
“We’ve made it a priority to bring Downtown back to life,” says Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. “New office tenants, residential properties, and the renovated Market Square is part of that vision. For retail, Project Pop Up Pittsburgh: Downtown is a great tool to inject life and energy into the Downtown business district."
Over 90 artists, entrepreneurs, and non-profits submitted proposals to activate Downtown storefronts. Finalists were invited to “pop” into Downtown for limited engagements. These finalists received grants with which they will occupy currently vacant stores in Downtown throughout 2012. Click here to see a map of these projects.
Our pilot year will be wrapping up at the end of 2012. We hope you will continue to visit the vendors throughout 2013.

Night Market IV • Friday April April 26, 2013 • 6:00 - 11:00 p.m. • Located Outside at the Corner of 8th Street & Penn Avenue
Night Market IV occurred during the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Spring Gallery Crawl on April 26, in the parking lot at the corner of 8th Street and Penn Avenue. It was our biggest Night Market yet, with 27 local vendors offering handmade jewelry, clothing, crafts, art, handmade soaps, food, and more! The Market ran from 6-11 pm and was visited by nearly 5000 people throughout the evening!
Along with the vendors, our friends from Yelp Pittsburgh joined us with the Yelp Prize Wheel, and DJ Soy Sos played a variety of American pop, soul, and funk, Latin, reggae, and a wide selection of dance music from around the world throughout the night. Dancers from The Pillow Project were also on hand performing among the crowd in an improvisational fashion, along with a live chalk artist who created a temporary art display on the brick wall that runs along the parking lot.
Thank you to everyone who came out and stay tuned for our next Night Market this upcoming July!

Project Pop Up: Urban Forest was one of the more recent Project Pop Up locations for the summer of 2012 and the newest installation to the ToonSeum Sprout Fund Comic Courtyard. From Thursday, June 21 through Tuesday, July 10, downtown workers, residents and visitors were able to escape the busy streets of Pittsburgh into a new oasis of relaxation to sit amongst a variety of trees.

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, ToonSeum and the the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership united to bring the forest to Downtown Pittsburgh. The Urban Forest featured colorful tables and chairs beneath the shade of five different trees (dawn redwood, ginko, autumn blaze maple, black gum, zelkova) that were accented by Wichita Blue Juniper, ferns and lilies. The trees and shrubbery were on loan from local lawn and turf management firm, Lawn Sense. The project aimed to surprise Downtown patrons and suggest the possibility of a greener city environment including possible future ventures similar to the Urban Forest.
