After being closed for more than 18 months, The City Side Lawn of Point State Park opened to the public on May 30, 2008. The completed first phase is part of $32 million in refurbishing work to be completed at the park. Some of the renovations include: reopening of the walkway over the Allegheny River to the North Shore, filling in the Fort Pitt Music Bastion to provide more lawn space, numerous shiny silver benches with lots of seat room line the perimeter of the city side lawn and new terrazzo-and blue-stone walkways were added. Also part of phase 1, the Great Lawn and Woodlands area of the park will reopen to the public in October, 2008.

Architect Marion Pressley also seeks to establish a new visitors center, raise the Point fountain and create new entrances for increased accessibility to the park. The plan also includes boat tie-ups from the rivers, connections to the Allegheny Riverfront Park and a link between the visitors center and the Fort Pitt Museum by a tunnel gallery. Another goal includes making the park easier to locate. The additional renovations to the park are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010.
