Renewal, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization providing alternative housing and community corrections services to individuals in the County, State and Federal criminal justice systems.
In 1976, Renewal was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization. In the early 1980s, Judge Maurice Cohill issued a court order limiting the number of inmates that could be housed in the Allegheny County Jail in Western Pennsylvania. In August 1986, Renewal, Inc.'s Board of Directors submitted a proposal, in response to Allegheny County's RFP for "two 25-bed work release facilities for men." Since then, Renewal, Inc. has provided alternative housing and rehabilitation services to residents from a wide variety of jurisdictions.
In December 2001, Renewal, Inc. celebrated its 25th anniversary – 25 years of renewing individuals in the criminal justice system and reintegrating them into society. Renewal, Inc.’s two facilities in downtown Pittsburgh conform to all codes, zoning ordinances and health department requirements.
Renewal, Inc. has been an American Correctional Association (ACA) accredited agency since 1999. Its residential facilities are located, in Downtown Pittsburgh, at 339 Boulevard of the Allies and 704 Second Avenue. Renewal is a 501 (c) (3) agency, and its facilities are conveniently located near legal offices, courts and public transportation.
