49th Annual Light Up Night® Celebration - Friday, Nov. 20, 2009

This year, holiday traditions will continue, with some new elements and enhancements. Light Up Night® begins early in the day with special exhibits and activities throughout Downtown and concludes with the Macy’s Fireworks Finale.  Come down early to experience good food, great shopping and a magical wonderland of fun for the entire family!

Macy's Fireworks Finale

A Firewoks show extravaganza! You won't want to miss this amazing theatrical spectacle set to music, complete with a multitude of special effects never used before on Light Up Night including a "Niagra Falls" effect! The show will broadcast LIVE on 3WS.

The Macy's Fireworks Finale begins at 9:15 p.m. and will be launched from the Andy Warhol Bridge (7th Street Bridge) and barges on the Allegheny River.

The best seat in the house to watch the fireworks will be on the Roberto Clemente Bridge, where the Light Up Night Bridge Party will be rockin' before the big fireworks finale!

Pittsburgh Créche Dedication Ceremony
Noon; U.S. Steel Tower Plaza

 - The Pittsburgh Creche is the world's only authorized replica of the creche in St. Peters Square in Rome. The Pittsburgh Crèche can be viewed 24 hours a day beginning Nov. 20, 2009 through early January 2010.

- Al Dowe and Etta Cox Trio; popular jazz vocalist; voted 1999 "Performer of the Year" by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; 6:15 - 7:15 p.m.

- TheStickers; local country music band showcased at the 2009 Jamboree In the Hills; 7:30 - 9 p.m. 
 

*The stage at PPG Plaza will be emceed by WTAE-TV's Mike Clark and Sally Wiggin

PDP Information Booths; first 10,000 people receive a FREE Light Up Night® glow necklace! The PDP will have booths in PPG Place Plaza and on the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

Light Up Night Events at Fifth Avenue Place

- Unity Tree Lighting Celebration; corner of Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street
- Fifth Avenue FREEZE; ice-carving shows and more
- LuminoCITY ; featuring a replica of Pittsburgh's skyline built from recycled steel that will be lit up during the evening
- Holiday entertainment & activities for the entire family inside Fifth Avenue Place

 

Light Up Night Bridge Party on the Roberto Clemente Bridge
5 - 9:30 p.m.

Party on the Roberto Clemente Bridge featuring peformances by Pittsburgh CAPA Middle Chorus, No Bad JuJu and Pittsburgh's complete oldies band, Johnny Angel and the Halos

Various food and booth vendors and children's activities will be located at various points along the Roberto Clemente Bridge

* We'd like to thank Starbucks Coffee Company on Sixth Street for providing refreshments for our speakers and performers at our Light Up Night Bridge Party. 

* The stage on the Roberto Clemente Bridge will be emceed by WTAE-TV's Andrew Stockey and Wendy Bell, and Jim Merkel of 3WS 'Merkel in the Morning.'

 
Macy's Light Up Night Events
5:30 - 8 p.m.; Various floors inside Macy's Department Store

- Meet and greets with costume characters including Disney's Sailor Mickey and Minne and Smurf and children's activities galore!
- Special performance of "The Nutcracker" by The Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School
- Holiday Window Unveiling featuring a peformance by The Manhattan Transfer; including an autograph signing and meet & greet 
* Unveiling outside on Smithfield Street entrance
 

"Highmark Light Up Night March"  
6:45 - 7:30 p.m.

- March from Macy's to PPG Place with the Franklin Regional and Mount Lebanon High School Marching Bands; performance at PPG Place at 7:15 p.m.; from there, march proceeds to the Roberto Clemente Bridge


Macy's Fireworks Finale
9:15 p.m.

- Launch from the Andy Warhol Bridge (Seventh Street Bridge), and barges on the Allegheny River

Getting Around on Light Up Night®

You can avoid traffic on Light Up Night by parking in a fringe lot and taking a shuttle into Downtown. Alco Parking will provide a convenient, free shuttle from its North Shore lots and its 15th St. parking lot in the Strip District. 

If you are driving into Downtown, make sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get here. Also, many parking lots and garages Downtown offer discounted parking ($5 or less) after 4 p.m. Click here to access our parking page for a list of participating facilities.

We are highly encouraging the use of public transportation, the "T" or car-pooling on Light Up Night. Also, bus routes will be detoured on Friday, Nov. 20. Check www.PortAuthority.org for a complete list of detours during the week of Light Up Night, or call (412) 442-2000.
