Pittsburgh, PA — All of the barriers in Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh will be removed and traffic will be restored to pre-construction patterns starting tomorrow morning. The renovation project that began last August is nearing total completion, as pedestrians and vehicles move freely in and around Market Square. Vehicular traffic coming down Forbes Ave. will resume its counter-clockwise movement around the Square. The remaining construction work will occur on the side streets—Graeme, Market and McMasters. Street paving and secondary tree plantings will occur early this fall, with a grand re-opening in late October.

“It has been a massive project and we’re thankful for everyone’s patience during each phase of construction,” said Michael Edwards, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP). “We’ve heard a lot of positive feedback since programs returned to the Square, including the Farmers Market, concert series and KidsPlay, and now more people will be able to enjoy dining outside in the cafes with the reopening of the street and sidewalks.”

The Market Square renovation is a project of the City of Pittsburgh under Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. It is the culmination of several years of public process and has been made possible through the leadership, vision and financial contributions of the City of Pittsburgh, Colcom Foundation, Heinz Endowments, Richard King Mellon Foundation and The Hillman Corporation.
