Pittsburgh, PA — The Market Square renovation project in Downtown Pittsburgh that began last August will reach a significant milestone on Monday, May 3 as traffic patterns switch to accommodate a reopening of a portion of the Square and closure of another.
The road along the interior of Market Square between Moe’s Southwest Grill and GNC (in PPG Place) will reopen at 7 a.m. on Monday, May 3 after being closed for 8 ½ months. This means, all vehicular traffic coming down Forbes Avenue will turn left into Market Square by Moe’s Southwest Grill and continue past Primanti Brothers and PPG 2, then turn left by GNC onto Forbes heading towards Stanwix Street.
Construction crews will then work to close the roadway between Market Square Place (former GC Murphy Building) and Dunkin’ Donuts. This includes closures at Market Street/Fifth Avenue and Graeme Street/Fifth Avenue. The new traffic patterns will be fully completed by 9 a.m. on May 3. The City is making accommodations for merchant deliveries during the Phase II construction phase. McMasters Way will be closed to all vehicles, except for residents using the Market Square Place garage. Pedestrian access will be maintained in all areas.
“I want to thank the people of Pittsburgh for their patience with this strategic and significant renovation project,” Mayor Ravenstahl said. “There is a lot of synergy happening in and around historic Market Square, and I’m confident that when we experience its grand re-opening that we will attract even more residents, visitors, and businesses to our Downtown.”
The interior of the Square will be open by June 1, allowing the return of events and some outdoor dining. The PDP, with support from the City of Pittsburgh, is planning a soft opening of Market Square on June 3 with the first Farmers Market and concert of the season. The remaining portion still under construction will reopen later in the summer.
“We’ve been communicating regularly with merchants in Market Square about this process so they understand how the new traffic patterns may impact their deliveries, customers and tenants,” said Michael Edwards, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP). “We’re looking forward to the return of the Farmers Market and other events in the Square this summer.”
