PITTSBURGH, PA — If the long winter has kept you indoors, the kick off of outdoor dining season on Monday, April 6 in Market Square is sure to be welcome news. In addition, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) has been gearing up for the kick off by installing spring banners and a stage awning, and removing its umbrella tables and chairs from storage. Brock Wilson, the PDP’s Market Square Clean Team Ambassador, has also been tidying up the grounds and wiping down seating walls and tables/chairs in anticipation for Monday.

Other signs the Square is ready? Tulips have been planted and the raised beds now have fresh mulch (thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and volunteers), the pear trees are spotting delicate white flowers and jazz music is playing from the stage.

Of the more than a dozen street cafes in Market Square that offer outdoor dining, three participated in the PDP’s Paris to Pittsburgh Program (funded by Colcom Foundation) last year. Moe’s Southwest Grill’s owner, Mike Geiger, believes his business is thriving due in part to the improvements he’s made to his restaurant through the Paris to Pittsburgh program.
“When we open up our large windows, it creates such a welcoming atmosphere and we are busy from lunch time on,” said Geiger.

“It’s amazing how much more inviting Downtown is when you have vibrant street cafes with awnings, umbrella tables and flowering planters,” said Michael Edwards, President and CEO of the PDP. “I encourage anyone who hasn’t experienced it, to head to Market Square for lunch or dinner on a warm spring day.”

Upcoming events in Market Square include Earth Day on April 22, a Workers Memorial Day service on April 28, the first of the weekly Farmers Market on April 30 and a Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 8. Thursday lunch time concerts will return in June. Reconstruction of the historic square is scheduled to begin in August, however all businesses will remain open during the remodel.
