PennDOT District 11 Weekend Construction Summary Nov. 5-8
Pittsburgh, PA– PennDOT District 11 is reminding motorists many highway and bridge improvements will be occurring this weekend, Nov. 5-8, in Allegheny County.
Motorists should plan their travels accordingly by anticipating highway work zones, slowing down, exercising patience and being safe. For more information, visit the District 11 website, www.dot.state.pa.us, click PennDOT near you, “11” under “roadwork” or the Parkway East project website at www.penndot11.com. PennDOT reminds motorists to call the construction hotline at 412-429-6035 for information and current activities on the Parkway East, Parkway West, Parkway North, I-79 and Route 28. All work is weather permitting. Call 1-800 FIX ROAD to report roadway problems and concerns.
The High Occupancy Vehicle (HOVs) lanes on I-279 (Parkway North) and I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) are open to all outbound traffic on weekends after 7 p.m. on Friday and remain open until 5 a.m. on Mondays. In addition, the two passenger vehicle rule does not apply during weekend hours. To alleviate congestion and bypass construction, motorists are encouraged to use the HOV lanes to exit the City of Pittsburgh following games and other events downtown on weekends.
PennDOT also reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.comor call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions and cameras on major roadways before traveling.
Below is a summary of the major closings and restrictions this weekend:
Various Locations
Light Pole Maintenance
Crews will be conducting light pole maintenance. Work will occur as a slow moving operation. Intermittent, single lane closures will occur as needed from 4 a.m. to noon Saturday in the following locations:
- Fort Pitt Bridge (I-376 Parkway West)
- Fort Duquesne Bridge (I-279 Parkway North)
- Parkway East/Central (I-376) between the Fort Pitt Bridge and Bates Street (Exit 73) Interchange

Parkway North
Fort Duquesne Bridge
Single lane closures and brief traffic stoppages of 15 minutes or less will occur on the Fort Duquesne Bridge (I-279) and Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard - Exit 1C) on the North Side in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, as needed through Nov. 12. While all ramps and the upper and lower decks will remain open this weekend, motorists should expect significant delays and stop conditions on the bridge this weekend. The following restrictions will occur:
- Single lane traffic on the upper and lower decks of the bridge from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Nov. 1 through Nov. 13. Crews will be performing under deck repairs and installing pavement markings.
- Long-term left lane closure on the inbound lower deck of the bridge around-the-clock through Nov. 12.
- 15-mintue traffic stoppages on northbound and southbound Route 65 ramps from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6-7, for steel bolt work, which cannot be performed under traffic.

Parkway West
Utility Work
Traffic in both directions on the Parkway West (I-376) in Collier Township, Allegheny County, will be stopped briefly on Sunday morning, Nov. 7, weather permitting. One complete stoppage of 15 minutes or less will occur between 9-10 a.m. Sunday in the area between the I-79 Interchange (Exit 64) and Campbells Run Road off-ramp (Exit 62). Crews from Duquesne Light will be replacing a wire over the Parkway West.

I-79
Construction
Traffic on northbound I-79 will be reduced to a single lane from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, between the Crafton (Exit 60) interchange and the Neville Island Bridge. Some minor, short-term southbound restrictions and moving lane closures may also occur. All ramps will remain open. Crews will be improving shoulders and installing pavement markings.

Route 28
Construction
Northbound (outbound) traffic is reduced to a single lane between the 31st Street Bridge and the 40th Street Bridge in the City of Pittsburgh around-the-clock through July 2012.

Construction
Northbound traffic on Route 28 will remain in a single lane pattern from the Shaler Water Treatment Facility to the Etna interchange around-the-clock through early December. The northbound off-ramps to Route 8 and Sharpsburg are also closed. Southbound Route 28 is open to two lanes.

Route 65
Bridge replacement
Route 65 is reduced to a single, 10-foot wide lane in each direction between Hiland Avenue and Camp Horne Road in the Borough of Emsworth through November.

Roadway Widening
Lane closures are occurring on Route 65 from the Dilworth Run Bridge (near Wendy’s) to approximately 530 feet south of Locust Street in the Borough of Avalon through mid-November.

Construction
Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) is reduced to a single lane in both directions long-term in the area of the I-79 interchange in Glenfield Borough through December. Various ramp closures are also in place.
