Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership Panel Releases Parking Recommendations
Pittsburgh, PA— In a series of informational sessions this week hosted by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), national parking experts met with various stakeholder groups affected by the public parking system and proposed monetization of the City’s parking garages. Individuals representing neighborhood business districts, building/business owners, large employers, universities, hospitals, churches and other community organizations attended the sessions on Monday and Tuesday at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel in Downtown. The experts, Dave Feehan, Civitas Consultants, LLC; Dennis Burns, Kimley-Horn Associates and Tom Morsch, Scott-Balice Strategies, presented their findings today at 2 p.m.
“Our goal was to provide a forum for our Downtown constituents to become better educated about the issue and its potential impact on Downtown development,” said Michael Edwards, president and CEO of the PDP. “We are very pleased with the turnout and believe the final analysis will provide City leaders with comparative background and data to ultimately assist in the creation of the City’s monetization plan.”
Key findings:
1. The City’s pension crisis is very complex with a variety of legal and financial issues and the proposed parking monetization strategy is the best possible option to fund the pension program.
2. There are some real positives that can result, including new technological improvements, the possibility of more parking options and an enhanced customer experience.
3. Current parking planning and policy management is fragmented and will need to be more centralized under the new strategy.
