Not long after city boosters practically gave up on attracting a grocery store to Downtown, a local investor is seeking to put a market right in the heart of the Golden Triangle.
Wayne Hancock of Cecil, Washington County, said he is planning to open a small store affiliated with the Independent Grocers Alliance, or IGA, in a former McDonald's at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Wood Street, just a few blocks from the Piatt Place condominiums and student dorms at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Point Park University.
"Our business model is that bigger is not always better," said Hancock, who envisions a 4,300-square-foot grocery with an emphasis on fresh meat, produce and prepared foods. "It's not going to be big, it's not going to be fancy; but it's going to be fast, and it's going to be friendly."
