Drivers would pay more to park if a private firm upgrades the Golden Triangle's aging garages and offers early-bird and weekend discounts to shoppers, parishioners and commuters, according to a Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership report released Wednesday.
"We heard over and over again that supply and availability are the big issues," said city consultant David Feehan, president of Washington-based Civitas Consulting. "People driving down the street need to know there's at least a possibility of finding a spot in front of a store."
Suggestions to increase open parking spots and keep prices in check came from Downtown employers, neighborhood groups, churches and universities during a two-day summit organized by the partnership, which counts UPMC, Highmark, Macy's, Point Park University and dozens of other major employers as members.
