Post-Gazette: Panel makes recommendations for parking lease plan

A panel of parking experts recommended Wednesday that any plan to turn over Pittsburgh parking garages and meters to the private sector have inducements -- such as free parking for religious services and special supports for retailers -- to win broad community support.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership paid for the $19,000 study, which included meetings Monday and Tuesday with business owners, community groups and other parties that would be affected by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's plan to lease parking authority assets. Mr. Ravenstahl hopes a long-term lease could net $200 million for the city's troubled pension fund.
