Post-Gazette: Transportation funding can't wait

In 2007, Pennsylvania's ACT 44 appeared to have solved the daunting statewide transportation-funding problems identified by the Transportation Funding and Reform Commission. Unfortunately, we know better now.

Increased costs and the misbegotten reliance on tolling I-80 as a revenue source -- which was rejected by the U.S. Department of Transportation -- have resulted in an even larger transportation budget deficit than originally thought.

Now, the Legislature must do the hard work of identifying revenue sources to meet the needs of our state's transportation systems. We urge legislators to solve this crisis on a bipartisan basis now. We have too much to lose to let the issue drift until after the November elections.
