Lubin & Smalley Florists sat along Fifth Avenue 40 years ago, when customers dressed up to shop Downtown.
It moved to Market Square by the time then-Mayor Tom Murphy 12 years ago wanted to raze the Fifth and Forbes avenues retail corridor for a singular development project. The florist was there two years later, when Murphy's plan failed.
Today, owner Rich LoPresti remains. He looks out the front window of his store -- tulips are in -- and sees chainlink fencing around a square torn apart by construction equipment. He'll hang on another six months, when the fencing can come down.
