Tribune-Review: Market Square gains eateries since renovation
Nick Nicholas has experienced it all.
"I've gone through four 'redevelopments' of Market Square -- in 1961, in the mid-1970s and again in 1990-91 -- and with this final one, they've finally got it right," he said.
Nicholas, who represents the third generation of his family to own Nicholas Coffee Co. at 23 Market Square, said the decision to widen the sidewalks, eliminate curbs and force automobiles to circle around a center piazza has given the square a European appearance that attracts visitors, Downtown workers and new businesses.
As a result, the square now is a gathering place for people to meet friends and enjoy a meal, and it is safer from auto traffic, he said.
Starting in 2010, and since completion of the $5 million renovation on Oct. 26, 2010, 12 restaurants have opened and six more are coming, either on the square or close by.
