Tribune-Review: Rosebud food market opens Downtown

By Kim Leonard

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Rosebud Fine Food Market and Deli -- billed as the only grocery store in Downtown''s Golden Triangle -- held its official opening this morning in the Encore on 7th apartment building.

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and officials from several Downtown groups gathered at the 3,100-square-foot store along Seventh Street.

"The store might not be the biggest store you would see outside the city, but it''s very symbolic," Onorato said, emphasizing efforts will continue to get more people to live Downtown.

Many doubted the city could attract another food store 14 years after the last one, The Market on The Square, closed. "but it happened with a private operator, a local operator and there is now a food store in Downtown Pittsburgh."

Owner Robin Fernandez said about 130 customers shopped in the four-aisle store, with a variety of standard groceries, organic items and prepared foods, during a "soft" opening Monday.

The first day was encouraging. As workers were cleaning up last night, "Even at 10, people were knocking on the door," he said. Rosebud, with 15 employees, will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.
